Hydrodermabrasion

Hydrodermabrasion — sometimes written hydradermabrasion, or called a hydro-facial — is a water-based skin resurfacing treatment. It exfoliates the surface of the skin, clears congested pores and delivers a serum into the fresh surface, all in a single pass, with no needles and no downtime.

It is a genuinely pleasant treatment and it does what it claims on the surface of the skin. It is not, however, the same thing as a chemical peel or microneedling, and it will not do what those do. This page explains the difference, so you can ask for the right thing.

Hydrodermabrasion — including branded systems such as HydraFacial, which work on the same principle — is not one of the treatments offered at Beyond Skin UK. This page is kept as a guide to it — what it does, what it cannot do, and how it compares with the treatments we do provide — so that the answer you find here is an honest one, whoever you end up booking with.

WHAT IT IS

Three things happen in one pass.

A hydrodermabrasion facial is not a chemical treatment and it is not a needling treatment. It is mechanical: a handpiece moves across the skin delivering a controlled jet of water, which lifts dead cells from the surface and clears the openings of the pores.

Because the skin's surface has just been cleared, a serum applied immediately afterwards sits on freshly exposed skin rather than on top of a layer of dead cells. That is the reason the finish looks and feels noticeably better straight away.

The effect is real, and it is superficial. It works on the outermost layer of the skin — which is why it is comfortable, why it needs no recovery time, and also why it cannot reach the things that sit deeper.

01 · EXFOLIATION

A handpiece moves across the skin delivering a controlled stream of water and fine particles, lifting dead surface cells.

02 · EXTRACTION

The same stream clears debris from congested pores, particularly across the nose and chin.

03 · INFUSION

A serum — usually hydrating or antioxidant — is delivered into the freshly exposed surface, then sealed in.

AN HONEST ASSESSMENT

What it will do, and what it will not.

Most disappointment with hydrodermabrasion comes from expecting a deep treatment from a surface one. It is worth being clear about which side of that line it falls on before you book anything.

IT CAN

  • Improve the look of dull, dry or congested skin
  • Smooth the appearance of fine, superficial surface texture
  • Leave skin hydrated and more even in the short term
  • Sit comfortably alongside a longer-term treatment plan

IT CANNOT

  • Change pigmentation at any depth — melasma and sun damage sit below the surface
  • Improve acne scarring, which needs collagen remodelling rather than surface exfoliation
  • Tighten or lift the skin, or replace facial volume
  • Produce the collagen response that microneedling or peels are chosen for

HOW IT COMPARES

Three routes to better skin, at three depths.

At Beyond Skin UK the skin-health treatments are EPN microneedling, chemical peels and medical-grade skincare at home. Hydrodermabrasion is not one of them. It sits at the surface end of the range — useful for the look of the skin on the day, rather than for changing it over time. The two treatments beneath it in the table are the ones we deliver.

SUITABILITY

Who it suits, and who it does not.

Because it stays on the surface, hydrodermabrasion is generally well tolerated across skin tones — the risk of the post-inflammatory pigmentation that deeper treatments can trigger is much lower. It suits someone whose main concern is dullness, dryness or congestion, and who wants the skin to look better without any recovery time.

It is not the right choice if your concern is pigmentation, scarring, texture that sits below the surface, or the early signs of ageing. Those need a treatment that reaches the dermis, and the honest answer is that no amount of surface work will change them.

It is also not appropriate over active acne, broken or infected skin, cold sores, or skin that has had recent significant sun exposure. Pregnancy, certain medications and a history of problematic scarring all need to be discussed first.

LIVERPOOL & WIRRAL

Every treatment begins with an assessment.

If you are weighing hydrodermabrasion up against something deeper, that is a conversation worth having. At Beyond Skin UK we treat with EPN microneedling, chemical peels, iPRF and medical-grade skincare — recommended only after a full assessment, and where a different approach will serve your skin better, we will say so.

Our clinic is in Birkenhead, Wirral, a short distance from Liverpool, and we treat one patient at a time.
